We started planning our tasks and what we will include in our slides at the first meeting and were able to complete them during class time. Since Liyang (efficiency of AI) and Aydin (how AI is used and should be used in healthcare) focuses on the innovation and positive aspect of AI in healthcare, it ultimately assigned me the role of covering the negative aspect, which was perfect since that is what I discussed in my sustainability essay (AI needs ethical development to be able to function in the healthcare system). We initially wanted to bring awareness of AI in the healthcare field and I believe that we were able to successfully convey that message in our PSA. Our video follows this format: cover→ hook→ issue (risks of using AI when self diagnosing)→ transition→ how AI is/should be used in the medical field→ efficiency & data→ nonprofit→ references→ branding. Furthermore, our title in the introduction slide, “AI Diagnoses” and the picture of a robot hints that we are covering the medical sector and focus on social equity. The visuals emphasize that AI is not going anywhere and that since it is already advanced, why not utilize it to help physicians better assist patients in the real world. I designed the introduction slide, and ensured the fonts and background color were consistent throughout all slides.
My group’s Call for Action in the closing slide was to include a nonprofit organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This organization helps bring attention to the medical uses of AI, works to evaluate risks and provides trusted information on AI’s involvement (in mental health). I included this organization in my essay and brought the idea up to my group and they’d agreed to use it. Ultimately, I made that slide as well (generated QR code and provided some information on what they do). This organization is crucial for the future of AI since they are currently conducting tests for accuracy, safety, risk of harm/misinformation, while also setting guidelines for AI and advocating to the public that these tools can only be trusted if it is programmed to be safe, unbiased, and understandable. I believe that it was greatly relevant to our project.
I learned a lot from my group members’ topics. Aydin’s slide covered how AI is utilized and can be further improved in the future, which was really insightful because I gained some exposure from the articles we read for this class, however, he emphasized what AI was trained with. It showed me that AI can be used for good and plays a major role in sustainability because it would allow the medical field to advance, while allowing physicians to provide more care to patients. I also liked how Liyang made a chart that had actual data to back up our main message—AI can be sustainable if used efficiently. Before this class, I hadn’t known that AI had a higher detection rate for cancer screenings, and now I agree with AI being used in the medical field since it can help start preventative treatment earlier on, along with many other forms of care.
I really liked that we had minimal, but effective, information and used different text colors to emphasize the important parts to our audience. We also used images (AI in robot form, medical icons, and data) in the majority of our slides and the transitions really pulled everything together. I focused a lot on using AI for therapy, and although it didn’t mix as well with the topics my group members wrote their essays on, we were still able to compromise and I focused on the issue aspect for our project—risks of misdiagnoses.
I believe that PSA is the best genre to promote public awareness of sustainability issues because they are short and get to the main point. People nowadays are accustomed to short content, usually in the form of videos, and social media apps support that structure (YouTube shorts, Facebook/Instagram reels, TikTok videos, etc.). Additionally, it prevents excess information from being displayed since people will probably not remember it. However, not many people search up PSA’s when researching a topic or issue, so I believe that using social media to spread that message may be more convenient when reaching a wider audience.
I appreciate that I was able to communicate with my group outside of class time and they were able to complete their assigned tasks during class. I also like that they did not take feedback harshly, suggested ideas, and asked questions when confused. I found the overall project insightful and fun to do because it allowed me to learn more about sustainability while engaging in creating something that I will definitely remember down the line. As for improving the SPSA project in general, I think background audio or students being in the video can be helpful in grabbing the attention of the audience because it would feel like a one-on-one. However, I understand that it may be time consuming and some may not feel comfortable.
